Before Dyeing

FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH DYE YOU NEED

A typical pair of adult jeans weighs around 500–750 grams (dry). If you’re just refreshing the original color, one Mariposa dye tablet or one sachet of Mariposa dye crystals is enough. If you’re dyeing from white to a dark color, you’ll need double the amount.

CHECK THE CHART BELOW

It will help you estimate how much dye you’ll need. If your garment isn’t listed, keep in mind that one Mariposa dye sachet is enough for about 500 g (a little over 1 lb) of fabric when dyeing from color to same color.

CHOOSE A COLOR

We offer three special Mariposa shades made specifically for denim: Denim Blue, Dark Denim Blue, and Denim Black. These were specially formulated for great results on jeans — but feel free to use any Mariposa color or mix them to create your own custom shade!

DYE BY HAND OR USE YOUR WASHING MACHINE

TEÑIR A MANO O EN LAVADORA.

Many people prefer hand dyeing because they can see the process as it happens —but using the washing machine is much easier (it does all the work for you!).

Machine Dyeing

Before you dye:

  • Check the dye quantity chart.

  • Set your washing machine to a hot water cycle with a small amount of water, and pour the dye into the washer.

Now you're ready to dye your pre-washed garment:

  • Soak your clean shirt with water and place it in the washer.
  • Start the wash cycle and let it run until just before the rinse cycle.
  • (Optional) For a deeper color, after 10 minutes, add up to 1 cup of salt.
  • Before the rinse cycle begins, start a new cycle and let it run completely.
  • Rinse the shirt under running water with soap.
  • Wipe down your washer with a damp cloth.

Clean Your Washing Machine

To clean your machine, simply run an empty cycle with detergent and a little bleach.

The dyeing process won’t damage your washer, though some rubber seals or plastic parts may slightly change color. Don’t worry — it won’t affect any future loads of laundry.

Hand Dyeing

Before you dye:

    • Check the dye quantity chart.
    • Dissolve the dye in 1/2 liter (2 cups) of boiling water.
    • Fill a large container with enough boiling water to submerge your shirt (but don’t put the shirt in yet).
    • Add the dissolved dye into the large container.

Now you're ready to dye your pre-washed garment:

  • Wet your clean shirt thoroughly and place it into the container.
  • Stir constantly for even dyeing.
  • (Optional) For a deeper color, after 10 minutes, add up to 1 cup of salt.
  • After 45 minutes, rinse the shirt under running water with soap until the excess dye is gone.
  • Hang to dry in the shade, then iron.

4 Tips to Fade Your Denim

One option is to use household bleach (the kind used for whitening clothes) as follows:

  • Pour a small amount of bleach into a container.
  • Dip a clean shoe brush into the bleach and “comb” it over the areas of your denim you want to fade.
  • Let the jeans sit for about 20 minutes, then rinse them with clean water.
  • Let them air dry—don’t wring them out.

Another alternative, if you want a stronger fading solution, is to use 3% sodium hypochlorite diluted in water.

The process is the same as above, BUT in this case, it’s especially important to avoid breathing in the fumes. Make sure to do it in a well-ventilated room.

Use Pumice Stones in the Washing Machine
To create a distressed, vintage look, toss porous stones (like pumice stones) into the washing machine along with your jeans.
This technique wears down the fabric, making the jeans look aged.
However, keep an eye on them during the process—they might rip or tear.

Rub with a Sand-Filled Bag
You can get a similar effect by rubbing a bag filled with sand directly onto your jeans.
This technique also creates a worn, faded look, especially around high-contact areas like the thighs and knees.
